Revered as an artistic interpreter, Antoine Predock’s notoriety is born of an intensely personal dialogue with place. Restoring the primal connections we both deeply desire and viscerally need. Defying categorization, because there is no Predock style. There is only architecture’s reciprocity with the landscape. When the earth speaks, Predock listens. Where Predock’s imagination plays, awards and commissions follow.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, rising in choreographed and kinetic glass processions from the prairied horizon.
Highlands Pond House in Aspen, a 14,000-square-foot residence seemingly carved into the very mountain, inspired by the daring aspen forest and ancient landforms.
Turtle Creek House in Dallas, an Austin limestone “theater of trees” incorporating the private owners’ passion for bird-watching and collecting modern art.
Mr. Predock’s landscape-driven approach was a natural fit for Papagayo — where treading lightly has been the mantra since the beginning of time. It’s a shared vision of innovation and originality in design based on mutual respect for nature and its limits.
At Papagayo, Mr. Predock encountered one of the most beautiful and biodiverse places he’d ever seen. A unique blend of tropical dry forest and coastal-marine ecosystems with a mosaic of landscapes, microclimates, and sublime wildness. Exploring its alma del lugar — the soul of the place — has been one of his greatest adventures.
Capturing the artist’s imagination, Predock’s proclivity for unbridled creation was unleashed. Where others imagine windows, he envisions apertures — deep, purposeful instruments for viewing the landscape. Guiding light. Releasing space. Focusing your vision on the riveting dance of the setting in a choreographic, episodic way.
For choreography, Predock selected a seductive and interconnected dance of manmade and natural — space, air, water, and earth. Central to his vision: a fluid necklace of Guanacaste stone. Meandering around landmark trees that run along the ridgeline, it establishes rhythm and texture in the streetscape while anchoring structures into the earth 250 feet above the Pacific. His unique forms appear to defy gravity as they spread out into space, jutting into the sea over a canopy of tropical dry forest and ancient lava rock.
A complex landform with bays on two sides and disparate topography, sun orientation, vegetation, and landscape characteristics ensured that all 13 houses would be unique. Anomalies were celebrated — each an original sculptural composition using suspension to thrilling effect.
Though similar design elements are used throughout, the integration of modules varies according to site-specific conditions. Design flows from the land, accentuating view corridors, privacy, the path of daylight into stellar constellations, and close encounters with the natural world.
Architecture becomes landscape. Unexpected sky bridges, floating stairs, and processional spaces emerge from the forest. Expansive terraces and decks provide welcoming retreats at one with interiors. Beckoning families to reach out and touch nature’s restorative wonders.
As you move along the necklace, the repetition of similar forms and materials creates a sense of rhythm and harmony. Enduring natural materials were selected to achieve longevity – patinated green copper roofing, and walls crafted from Guanacaste stone, lava rock, and integrally-colored architectural concrete.
The idea was to build something of enduring quality that will continue to gain authority and permanence over time. Details are minimized to allow the drama of individual homesites to dominate. Large, uninterrupted masses of material define living spaces, blending performance and beauty with a refined sculptural impact. Clean and straightforward, comfortable and sheltering.
Major and minor color notes take their cues from tones and textures found in the landscape — trees and wood, sky and water, earth and rock, sand and bark. A refined aesthetic pervades with a resilient element of hand craftsmanship throughout.
